If you scan the venue’s website ahead of time you will be happier with your choices.

Plan for nourishment and foodie options

4.0 It is all about the music. After a long day of listening to music food is vital. If you want adult beverages, food and water is part of your survival skills. Make time to eat in between venues or dine while listening to your favorite artist. Look at the menus for the locations that provide food and keep this in mind when creating your schedule. Grill Man’s entry into Hangry-Land is to be avoided. I still love him when he goes there but he loses his pleasing personality.

Gourmet Market- Modica Market Items are a bit pricey but the gourmet selection is amazing. There is something to be said for accessibility and not having to get back out into traffic or drive anywhere. Full range of wine, beer, pastries and most everything else that you will need for 30a Songwriters Festival 2022.

How to travel from venue to venue during 30a Songwriters Festival?

5.0 Indeed if you plan to enjoy adult beverages, select your venues and housing accordingly. 30A Songwriters venues are distributed on 30a throughout South Walton. Hop on the bus Gus, you don’t need to discuss much. From limousines to Taxi, Uber or Lyft as needed make a plan, man and drop your keys.

If my memory serves I recall more than one unnamed group riding a bicycle to see shows. Of course, this is only a good idea for shows during the day. Also, keep in mind that you don’t want a PWI- Peddling While Intoxicated. No one wants to land on the news for evading police on a low-speed-pursuit.

Find the musician that you will love next

6.0 Plan to attend the acts that you really want to see. If you think that this artist is crazy popular and the venue is small, go early and stake a spot. Otherwise you risk standing in a long line for the one group that you didn’t want to miss.

Never underestimate the zeal of groupies to get up close and personal with you while trying to get closer to the object of their affection. Meanwhile, you may discover a new artist to love. Grill Man and I have discovered several artists using this method for example the dreamy Chris Stills, lovely Liz Longley and dynamic Reverend Shawn Amos and The Brotherhood.

More than once I have been surprised by the exceptional musicianship of a band that I had never heard of. As an example a Nu Grass Band was playing at AJ’s which for us was the “band before the band we wanted to see”. Old Salt Union came out and rocked the house. Much to my rock-n-roll and R & B soul, I actually liked it. After the encore was over, the crowd started throwing money on the stage for them to keep playing.

What about Covid and 30a Songwriters Festival?

7. Last year covid killed the festival and left many avid music lovers in mourning. This year the festival has implemented a new covid policy “requiring valid ID, Vaccine card or proof of professionally administered negative covid tests within 72 hours of festival for all artists, volunteers or ticket holders. ” The Watercolor box office will issue wristband for use during the weekend.

8. Since this year the wristbands will also include a chip that allows you to upload credit card data to easily pay for food, drinks, merch etc. The press release was unclear to me if this was at all locations or a select few. If you choose to use this feature “you can count on shorter faster lines and contact free transactions.” Of course the cynic in me wants to know if I would be tracked during event? How will this information be used, sold and how safe is the data? Inquiring minds…..

What else should I need to bring ?

9.Of course pack an emergency travel kit ahead of time. Here are a few options for your travel pack:

Snacks, protein bars, waters, headache or allergy meds, portable phone charger, rain poncho, antiseptic wipes, batteries for camera or charger, phone charger, disposable cameras, gloves, extra wool wraps and flask of your favorite “patience-juice”

10. While enjoying the festival take time to enjoy the lovely natural settings around 30a. All along the water ways, nature is calling you for a walk on the beach or in one of the State Parks. Go early and get your walking miles in before the music starts and the calories pile up.

Put away electronics and chill

Somehow work will always follow you in some manner. Unless of course, you drop your phone in a box and forget it until you return. This is lovely for the time you’re away if you can forget lack of access. Most of us do not want to lie awake at night and wonder. It is easier to take the phone and navigate as needed.

Smart phones are a wonderful tool if you do not allow them to become the bane of your existence. Like everything else, use the phone, text and email options in moderation. Especially if you want Snapper Downtime on Dauphin Island. Red Snapper season is on the list of holy days to celebrate and Dauphin Island is the place to worship. If you don’t believe it’s on the list, ask Grill Man.

Why go to Dauphin Island?

Dauphin Island is a quiet island that time somehow forgot. Clearly the city leaders are trying to keep the small town feel alive and well. This feature makes it a perfect place to spend a covid lockdown with family or friends. The Island has plenty of places for rent on the water or near the water. Beaches are located every direction that you go.

There is hardly better fishing to be had than on the Gulf Coast. If you have a boat, you’re all set to go. If not, the Island has lots of boats for charter. Hiring a guide is another option to find out the latest information on “what’s biting where”.

Snapper Downtime on Dauphin Island is what the Doctor ordered

Grill Man loves the water and he almost always brings home fish. Flying across the water like Henry the Heron on the way to fish is one of his favorite things to do. Although he truly loves it when Mother Nature cooperates and provides a great day on the water for fishing. Like most women, Mother Nature is not always compliant.

If you have managed to catch your limit in red snapper, check out my recipe Fish to Table Sriracha Kissed Fresh Red Snapper, it is delicious. My recipe would taste lovely on a variety of fish. Of course, most of the seafood markets on the Gulf Coast will be happy to sell you fresh fish.

While Grill Man is navigating the Gulf waters, I settle in for quiet time at the beach and paddle boarding. Being able to paddle directly off the dock is lovely early in the morning. Although my favorite time is near the end of the day when the sun is settling down.

Watching the sun dip down is soothing to the soul. Add in an adult beverage and it’s the perfect recipe for the end of the day. Learning to appreciate the simple things is priceless. 2020 clearly has a mission to remind us all about the important things in life.

To cook or not to cook

Before you head out to enjoy your Dauphin Island stay-cation, bring everything that you may need. It will help cut down on the trips out and the Island does have “island prices”. If you want to minimize cooking, make meals ahead of time and freeze.

Creating meals on the island is easy enough. Fresh seafood is available for purchase. Stop by a farmers market on the way or visit Mary’s market at the corner on the left just before you turn on the island.

Before you leave home, snip herbs and add to ziplock with water. Seal bag as much as herbs will allow. Then place in a small bag for easy transport to the island. Use fresh herbs liberally on vegetables and seafood. Herbs increase the flavor of food.

Always with fresh food, warm sunshine and nature to calm you, why would you not want Snapper Downtime on Dauphin Island? If you’re too far away to make it to our island, plan a quiet getaway near your home. Anywhere you live there is a beach or lake just waiting for you to visit.

In 2019, The Sound Wall and Russell Carter Artist Management organized the first Opelika Songwriters Festival with The Arts Association of East Alabama. With over 40 artists and 7 venues participating the Opelika Songwriters Festival launched with a big sound full of heart and soul.

Why should you attend a music festival?

Over time, Grill Man and I have discovered that music festivals allow you to see and hear artists in a more intimate setting than we are accustomed to with a typical concert. We love the 30a Songwriters Festival as well. Review Mimi’s Tips to Navigate 30a Songwriters Festival.

Typically, I struggle with the idea of seeing my favorite artist in a venue with 20,000 people. Although even I will be attempted occasionally but it must be on the level with Rattle That Lock Tour. Small town with a new festival almost ensures a manageable crowd. If you tend to avoid large crowds, this is a festival for you.

At small festivals we are often unfamiliar with some of the artists that participate. Yet this allows room for discovery of new music, artists and sounds to love. Selecting a festival that has a strong management team will provide you some comfort if you’re unfamiliar with artists. Remember, discovery is a part of every good adventure.

New festivals start off small and grow slowly as they learn how to work out details. Did I know all the artists prior to attending? No only a few names were familiar to us. Grill Man and I decided a weekend getaway with music in a new destination would be great. No matter how the festival turned out we would enjoy discovering Opelika and its surroundings.

What should I expect at a live performance?

The inaugural Opelika Songwriters Festival delivered music with a variety of musical style and experience. Live performances deliver a soulful connection to the music that is not possible any other way. During a songwriters music festival musicians will often share the mystery behind musical magic.

Of course, I am not alone in enjoying the revelations behind the music. In 1975, a song was released that puzzled the world. Oddly, I remember riding the school bus being puzzled by the words but drawn in by the passion and the creativity. Surely you must know the song that I am referring to but if you need a hint.

Music is the reason that Grill Man and I drove to adorable Opelika. Seven venues offered enough choices for anyone to design an evening around music, food and libations. In addition Opelika is steeped in history and educational opportunities may be sought out.

Adorable Opelika has everything that you may need for a great quaint getaway. Be adventurous go to adorable Opelika and Songwriters Festival 2020. Two breweries, distillery, great food and adventure opportunities all around this city.

Music yes but why Opelika?

Even I admit that I was surprised by Opelika and all that it offered. Truly I love the small town charm but with lots of restaurants, boutiques and a art minded community. Not to mention many outdoor activities are available within a short distance from the center of town in Opelika or Auburn.

Remarkably, if I had to move away from the coast and my little slice of heaven, Opelika could be an option. A small town close to a larger city and quick access to interstate. In ninety miles you may gain access to Atlanta’s international airport and whisk away to any travel destination. The city of Auburn is around the corner and has many places to tempt your palate.

Two favorite restaurants from 2019 trip

Zazu is a restaurant that you must visit while in Opelika. If you have time to read the menu, I promise it will make you hungry. Our foursome loved the attention to detail with the renovation of the building from 1800’s. The creative menu and food tempts the foodie in me. As a minimum order the Braised Pork Spring Rolls and Firecracker Shrimp. You will not be disappointed.

In addition, you have to love a restaurant owner that pays attention to the tiniest of details. Zazu offers fine dining foods in a relaxed atmosphere. Chef Graham Hage has teamed up with local farmers Opelika Grows, Oakview Farms Granary and Alabama Seafood Company. After you dine and discover how much you love the food, you may want to Buy the Kitchen a Six Pack for $10.

Book a reservation at Acre Restaurant

Since we were so close to Auburn, we made reservations at Acre Restaurant which is located in historic downtown. In 2018, Southern Living named Acre one of its top ten restaurants in the South. This is a restaurant to check out while visiting or driving through the area. Our meals were great and the charcuterie board outstanding. Book a reservation when you have the opportunity to visit David and his staff.

Of course, David Bancroft is certainly putting his stamp on the area. David’s accolades include Iron Chef winner and James Beard semifinalists. In Fall of 2018 David opened another restaurant named Bow and Arrow. Bow and Arrow is a casual family dining where “South Texas meets Alabama Potluck”. Of course, I too am a fan of potluck and enjoy sharing a bite of this and that.

Plan to visit adorable Opelika and Songwriters Festival 2020

Well, I will remain a visitor but I am so looking forward to Opelika Songwriters Festival March 27-29, 2020. Producers of festival are working on the final details of artists and schedule. Tickets should be available soon for purchase. The 2020 Festival curated over 70 performances playing in multiple venues in historic Opelika.

Last year the VIP tickets included a Sunday brunch and round table including Kate Campbell, Shawn Mullins and Dan Navarro. Festival curated a list of talent that performed well. Grill Man and I were pleased with this festival and look forward to attending in 2020.

Where should I travel in July to escape heat?

Upon arriving in Engelberg, I knew a village would limit our options. Although I had no idea what was in store for us, I knew it didn’t include 100 degree temps or high humidity. This joy alone is enough to leave you dazed by Engelberg in July.

What physical activities are you willing to try?

In Summer, Engelberg offers lots of physical activities for you to choose. Not all of the activities require you to tempt fate and assess your religious beliefs prior to participating. Area provides plenty of biking and hiking opportunities for all skill levels. Kayaking or rowing on Trubsee lake would be a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

For all of the adrenaline junkies Engelberg has got you covered from paragliding to glacier trekking or even bungee jumping. Zip lines, scootter bikes or rock climbing will surely awaken the fearless. The High Rope Park looks like an interesting way to see the view in Engelberg and offers a variety of skill levels.

Warning: Appropriate gear is required for certain activities before you will be allowed to participate.

At this stage, I am beyond the type of activities that allow gambling on whether or not survival is possible. Absolutely no rock climbing and I think ferrata is out as well. If you want to try this with a guide in Engelberg sign up for Rock Safety Days . In the US, ferrata is gaining popularity as well, visit Gear Junkie for 6 Best US Vertical Ferrata’s.

Is Mount Titlis worth the ticket price?

Zero rock climbing in my plans but I’m not a scardy-cat. While visiting this lovely city, I stepped onto numerous cable cars, revolving gondolas and The Titlus Cliff Walk. While amazed at the outstanding views I wondered about last maintenance check or stats on failures of my transport vehicle.

Built at 10,000 feet above sea-level, it is the highest suspension bridge in Europe. Views are stunning at this high point on Mount Titlis. If the weather cooperates, take the cable car one morning to Titlis for numerous actitivies and hiking trails. Truly you too will be dazed by Engelberg in July with all of this snow and ice.

Mountain tops are glacier-cold so layers of clothing are required to add on or take off as needed. We opted for Glacier Cave, suspension bridge and staring at the amazing views. Review the web site to see everything that is available so that you may choose how to spend the day.

My regrets on top of Mount Titlis is that I chose to decline the Snow Tubing. I also missed Little Italy joining me on top of the mountain. She was taking a snow day and resting up. UK tried to get me to join him but my scardy-cat kicked in.

All I could imagine was a quick slip of snow tubing off the mountain while yo-ho-ho-ho-yodeling for assistance all the way down. Not exactly how I wanted to end a vacation.

Mount Titlis Travel Tip: Go early!

Never is anyone a fan of long lines or big crowds. Remember weekends will be busier than during the week. Since Bollywood has a love affair with Switzerland it has increased visitors to Mount Titus. Ticket office opens at 8:30am, go early so that you arrive head of the crowds. Plus this will ensure that you have time to make a full day of all the numerous activities that you may enjoy. Check web site for any discount options.

Grill Man and I enjoyed only a portion of what the mountain had to offer. Stunning beauty and stark contrasts from hot valley floor to mountain peak snowy cold weather. Riding down the mountain with the Alpine air blowing and the ever jingly cow bells in the distance it is an Engelberg memory to store for later.

Next, from the Titus ticket window we walked back into Engleberg towards our hotel enjoying the scenery. Landscapes, housing and flora all designed and cultivated with interest. New places provide a interesting walk as you meander around. Lest we not forget the shopping opportunities for the item that you can’t leave Europe without.

My vacation happy-purchase

Deep in the middle of Alpine adventure kingdom, this is a mecca for Outdoor adventure gear. While traveling you should discover new brands and technology. Typically when I travel I will save a “I really need to buy item” to purchase while traveling. Later, every time I wear or see my trinket a happy vacation high ensues filled with memories of my trip.

My vacation happy was long overdue with the purchase of my Cloudventure Waterproof shoes. On the Gulf Coast our rain storms are famous and waterproof shoes are an necessity. Women love shoes but design and technology are important as well. Swiss brand ON is less than 10 years old.

Yet they have effectively stepped into the market with a quality product and innovative features. Thankfully, you don’t have to fly to Switzerland to purchase. The US has numerous locations to touch or feel these shoes. Locally Running Wild is listed as a location for this brand.

Between walking on the mountain and shopping you will surely work up a hunger. Please wander into one of the adorable restaurants in the area. Walk around until you find something that draws you in. If you don’t eat dessert first make sure that you try a decadent Swiss treat.

Eat, Pray and Love it all

As your wandering through Engelberg you will eventually see the Benedictine Abbey. Absolutely take time to visit Kloster Engelberg which has been central to Engelberg for almost 900 years. In 2020 the abbey will celebrate its 900th year. Check the web site for details on how you may participate.

In addition to the abbeys structure, visually the art, furnishings and marquetry is remarkable too. Of course, the artistry surrounding the abbey is everywhere you look. From landscaping to the tiniest detail I enjoyed this tour. I just didn’t have enough time to see it all.

Plan time to see Abbey’s cheese factory in action. Visit 10am-3pm and open daily for guided tours and cheese making lessons. Allow time to see Switzerland’s only cheese production in a monastery. You may even dine in bistro while watching the artisan cheesemakers in action.

First of all, the Abbey has many hidden treasures that time did not allow us to experience. Of course, I managed to capture a few photos of the courtyard gardens while touring inside. This is where I wanted to pick the cabbages but they would not let me.

Secondly, I read about the Abbey’s library which stores a remarkable amount of ancient books and music. Wise men have sought to preserve and protect this history. If only I could have spent some time there, I would have been in heaven.

Above all else for heavenly music review abbeys schedule to be certain to experience soothing effect of monks chanting. With our busy schedule time did not allow for this peaceful meditation. Allow more time at this location than you think that you may need to see the ancient history preserved by modern hands.

Do not attempt this at home

In this enchanting city, I have many things that I love and would enjoy again. Oddly my only complaint in Engleberg surrounds food. As a Southerner macaroni and cheese is a sacred dish filled with hot cheesy pasta ozzing with goodness. Älplermagronen is an Alpine Farmers Macaroni that is served with applesauce. What applesauce on cheesy pasta? Really? Switzerland I love you but not Alpermagronen.

Oddly, when I inquired about Alpermagronen tradition of adding applesauce to mac-n-cheese a Swiss native did not believe me. Apparently he too thought applesauce didn’t belong on mac-n-cheese. And he was absolutely right. While in Engelberg you may want to try dish and form your own opinion.

Engelberg is a resort village famous for skiing and other treasures. Prior to this visit, no one that I know had ever heard of this quiet hideaway in the mountains. We were Dazed by Engelberg in July with climate, mountains and small village atmosphere. Although I suspect this village is lovely any time.

First of all no matter how you spell it Luzern or Lucerne, add it to your travel list. It is the same destination. Luzern is located in the German speaking portion of Switzerland and this is what you will see on signs or maps. In the French or English language the city of Luzern is translated as Lucerne.

Luzern Lucerne How I love thee, Let me count the ways.

In my travels overseas, I have learned the hard way to plan arrivals as centrally located to hotel destination. Trust me when I say it is worth the time and ensures an easier trip. Bahnhof (Station) Luzern is a major hub and located in the heart of of the city. In addition, station offers 69 vendors to address travelers needs for that one item left at home.

“Everything for your daily needs. 365 days a year. From early till late. “

This train station is positioned on the south side of Lake Luzern which greets you upon arrival. Everywhere is a photo waiting to be captured and a postcard worthy view. Prominent arch way stands resolute in front of the train station. Original station was destroyed in 1971 and a comprehensive redevelopment took place before they built the station as you see it today. On departing, Ricard Kesslings statue Spirit of the times welcomes you to Luzern in a grand way.

As you leave the station sights and sounds surround you while attempting to dodge people traveling to and fro. Sensory overload is almost impossible to escape between the views and trying to navigate with luggage in tow to destination. I remember the immense pleasure that I felt while entering this lovely city by the river. It’s impossible to avoid excitement while wandering and discovering the city on the way to the hotel.

Within a short walking distance of the train station a bridge leads you over the beautiful water that appears to be everywhere. My Swiss Gear spinners were working well on my new luggage as we walked to Des Alpes Hotel . Des Alpes is located in the heart of historic downtown Luzern beside the waterway and Kapellbrucke wooden chapel bridge.

Work started on the wooden chapel bridge in 1332 on a portion of River Reuss. Kapellbrucke bridge linked the old town with the new and surely became a busy path. In the 17th century artist Hans Heinrich Wagman created 158 paintings which adorned the bridge until a fire burned the bridge in 1993. Water tower, 2 bridge heads and a portion of the paintings were saved.

Trails by fire and time did not prevent the Swiss from restoring Europe’s oldest covered wooden bridge. Take the time to walk around and see the surviving art work on this bridge and others. If only the walls could speak to us. Surely the bridge has seen everything from romantic trysts to proposals or hearts won and lost. At dusk walking this dark pathway helps you to step back in time with its creaky noises.

Truly, I loved staying in this area and its central location to everything. During my stay our hotel provided great customer service and a lovely meals by the river. If this hotel isn’t available there are several in this same area along the water and by chapel bridge. Get lost around this area and pop into shops, restaurants, museums and art galleries. We found a great Indian restaurant Mirch Masala within walking distance. Indian food is a great contrast to heavy German food.

Chapel Bridge Farmers Market has it all

Besides the creaky wooden bridge a gorgeous farmers market is held every Tuesday and Saturday. Vendors sell everything that I would need to complete a beautiful fresh meal. Or even items for a great picnic that could be shared on top the mountain. If only someone would have let me in the kitchen? Market has everything from fruits that I did not recognize to veggies saying, “Pick Me-Pick Me”. Vibrant flowers,seafood, cheese, bread, candies, coffee, pastries and more.

Our group wandered through the market while I had visions of recipes in my head. Meanwhile UK stopped in front of the local Pickle Meister and purchased a mixed bag of pickles including sweet, sour, hot and OMG-Hot. UK generously shared with our group as we walked and chatted about which pickle was best.

Counting the ways

From the farmers market to wandering around aimlessly through this city was my favorite part. However there are a few destinations that you should add to your list while you wander.

01 Hiking Suggestions

Scanning the horizon view of Mount Pilatus it is impossible to ignore the majesty and close proximity to the city. If hiking in Switzerland is on the travel list, “You have arrived at your destination.” Clearly more options for hiking will be available than you have hours in your day.

02 Lion of Lucerne Monument

The Lion Monument in Lucerne is a giant lion relief carved out of a wall of sandstone rock above a pond. (32.8′ x 19.7′) It was designed as a memorial for the mercenary soldiers from central Switzerland who lost their lives while serving the French king Louis XVI during the French Revolution. Mark Twain was touched by the Lion and wrote that it was ” the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world”.

03 Max Chocolatier

Swiss chocolate melts in your mouth and makes you want to scream for more. Not very lady like, but the chocolate is too damn good. I recommend a chocolate tasting experience at Max Chocolatier. This company has a special story to tell besides the outstanding products.

04 Fairytale Castle Chateau Gustch

Directions: In front of the Bahn train station, a bus station awaits for you. Take bus line No. 12, No. 18 or No. 2 to the Gutsch bus stop. Proceed to the Gutsch funicular and follow the signs.  The views are worth the effort and bus ride to see this castle.

If the weather is lovely please have lunch or cocktails on the patio. On my next trip, I will have to spend the night in this fairytale castle in the sky. Destination would be a prefect spot for celebrating a honeymoon or special occasion. I only wish that I had more time to fully discover every nook and cranny of Chateau Gustch so that I could share it all.

Chateau’s history is romantic and speaks to us of times gone by. In 2010 Alexander Lebedev and Evgeny Lebedev purchased the property. In time they developed a plan to create a luxurious hotel. Renovations included preservation of historical and artistic details. Attention to beauty surrounds this historical but updated setting that opened to guests in 2014.

05 Jesuit Church- First Baroque Sacred building in Switzerand

In 1666 construction began on this structure and just over a decade later an official inauguration was held for the church modeled after the Roman Church of the Gesu. Baroque and rococo stucco stand out as well as its altar and organ. A concert in this location would have amazing acoustics.

06 Spend a day without an agenda and discover the city

Wandering around a city without a plan or guide book is one of my favorite travel days. You may only discover the unexpected if you allow an opportunity to do so. Please don’t over plan your vacation and miss the chance to wander. Who knows what you might miss?

Truly I could ramble on about Luzern Lucerne How I love thee Let me count the ways. Visit Luzern! City is modern enough to have all of the conveniences of today while still preserving the old. Regardless of your age, this is a city for you to see with its vibrant life. Sadly I don’t know when but I will return one day.

Hoarding is not in my nature, but have you tried the chocolate from Switzerland? Clearly the cows love the idyllic landscapes, Alpine mountains, crystal clear lakes and fresh air. As cows graze on hillsides and mountain slopes they send out jingle jangles of bells. Surely cows grazing in such a beautiful location would provide the best milk for milk chocolate, hot chocolate or cheese.

Why should you travel?

Without a doubt, I was excited just about the idea of traveling. Hopping on a plane and traveling to destinations unknown is exactly what I craved. A couple of weeks away from home, work and chores seemed like a dream. My hardest decisions would evolve around clothing, chocolate, food and which boozy concoction to sample.

However, before the fantasy vacation could start I had to survive the gauntlet of advance preparation for all the “what ifs”. A last ditch effort to make sure that everything was covered from family to paying bills. Of course I needed travel funds on hand and banks notified of plans. According to my dealer AKA Verizon the device was prepped and ready for international travel. Now I could move to my least favorite part of traveling, packing.

To pack or not to pack?

Packing is my travel torture. After each trip I promise that next time I will pack smarter and lighter. I zeroed in on black as a theme but I still managed to pack too many clothes. Particularly on a overseas trip you must leave room for new purchases. If your suitcase is already crammed it’s hard to add anything. Unless your plan consists of wearing old clothes that you then leave scattered all over Europe.

Grill Man insisted that we carry on our suitcases. Yet even a 21 inch Swiss Gear case with spinners and a backpack has its limits. Yes, Mimi has spinners. Before you purchase a fancy bag online for 4x’s the price visit TJ Maxx for a variety of options. After you suffer through packing at least you may move to the next part of airport and travel adventures.

4, 975 miles later we arrived in Zurich Switzerland. After winding our way from plane through customs we settled into a coffee shop to wait for our friends, UK and Little Italy. Luckily I had Euros left over from the last journey that I knew I would swap for coffee and Swiss Francs.

Grill Man and I enjoyed taking a breather while sipping Kaffe-Creme which is espresso with cream added. Quickly we learned to order double espresso with cream, one small shot of espresso will not suffice. Not to mention, after an overseas flight it helps to gird your loins with caffeine before navigating the train station and luggage.

Please go to customer service for assistance with train ticket purchase. An angel flies in the station but between the language barriers and ticket choices it is easier speaking with customer service. Unless you feel like an educated world traveler by all means use the vending machines to buy tickets. With the ticket machine using in country currency is much faster than using a credit card. Otherwise, you may find yourself at the front of a long line of grumbling Swiss over the travel challenged Americans.

Central Plaza Hotel delivers

Train delivered us to the central part of Zurich which is located within a short walking distance to Central Plaza Hotel. Central Plaza Hotel staff offered excellent customer service. Hotel offers a hearty breakfast and wide array of options enough to please even Grill Man. Remember to book direct with hotel and it may save you money and provide other advantages.

While in Zurich please stop by the Central Plaza Hotel and say hello to Tobias AKA Toby. It’s possible that Toby is the happiest bartender in Zurich. Humor is delivered in fine form along with your handcrafted cocktail. Piano Man will tickle the ivories and sing songs from the USA as Toby quenches your thirst.

Zuri Fasct and why you should go

After our inaugural welcome to Zurich beverage we ventured smack dab in the middle of Zuri Fascht. Festival occurs every three years on the first weekend of July. Zuri Fascht origins date back to 1951 when Zurich celebrated its 600th year of joining the Swiss Confederation. Zurich Fest is the largest party that you have never ever heard of. Next Zuri Fascht is July 1-2, 2022.

Zuri Fascht attendance hit 2,500,000 people in 2019. What 2,500,000 people? At times, depending on the event or your location it was easy enough to get away from the horde of humanity. Zurich clearly understands how to manage and spread out the events around the city and Limmat River. Our group was in awe of the sights, sounds and ability to walk away from the action by detouring down a tiny street tucked away here or there.

Festival has something for everyone although the people watching is enough to entertain. Multiple bands and DJ’s playing from different locations around the city. In addition to restaurants, over 300 food booths offering tempting treats from all over the world. Of course, we were never thirsty with many popup vendors to choose from offering cocktails of all variations, wine and beer.

Day drinking may or may not lead to night dancing. You will have to be the judge. Zuri Fascht will amaze you with the range of events from high wire acrobatics acts over the river to air shows with Airbus Super Puma Helicopters and PC-7 Pilatus tandem airplanes. Fireworks lit up the night skies to signal days end. Truly there is something for everyone.

Starting out in Zurich during a festival kicked our vacation off with a startling bang. Zurich on its own is not to be ignored. Zurich is drenched in Old World History and modern influences all over the city. Bahnhofstrasse is a shopping wonder. Click the link for a street map to show you stores that you may want to visit from Cartier, Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, Omega and even H & M. For your chocolate fix go to Max Chocolatier and “experience chocolate for the first time.“

Once the shopping is satisfied or as a rainy day excursion, visit Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum Zurich). Neo-Gothic Castle and building houses exhibits a great overview of Switzerland’s history and art. Remember to ask a docent for details about the illusion that surrounds William Tell and the apple. Squeeze in a visit to the museum on the beginning of your travels in Switzerland. We enjoyed the museums grand introduction which added insight for our journey.

Travel instead of Lattes

Of course, traveling has always been one of my favorite diversions. Certainly my lineage includes an explorer who traveled the world seeking treasures and spices. Discovering how different cultures live, work, eat, and enjoy life is a gift. I believe that most people consider traveling as a luxury. Certainly funding is a crucial part of travel.

However, I think we should change our perspective to include traveling as part of our education and life experience. In our world we could do without less purchases of $5 lattes or the latest fad “It” item and save for travel. Travel opens your senses and touches your heart in a way that only it may offer.

Our trip in Switzerland started in Zurich with friends. 15 days later I would fly home after a trip that included planes, boats, ferries, buses, trains, cable cars and rotating gondolas. Traveling overseas is not a short trip and takes a fair amount of effort. Returning home is always the sweetest part of the journey.

Very soon after I returned home I found myself missing the Swiss while jet-lagged and hoarding chocolate. During my adventure I purchased sweet treats of chocolate to share with my friends and family. It has been challenging saving the chocolate until I could gift it to the recipient. Grill Man and I have a nightly little voice that demands chocolate and it has been a struggle.

New Orleans delivers in a way that only a city of her long dramatic history and diversity could serve up the joys and pains 24/7. From the wedding dancin’ in the streets, brass bands playing, food to tempt you in every direction and shopping treats to blow any budget, it’s hard not to love. Museums, history on every corner and art to please all. If you want it, they got it.

My quickie weekend in New Orleans centered around meeting up with my cousin, Funny Girl. It was high time for misdemeanors. I think our plan was similar. Eat, drink and be merry.

Prior to the trip, I reviewed who was playing where, started a list of options to chat about, reviewed places for dinner or drinks and promptly left list at home. Since my two assistants are always at the ready, I knew I didn’t have to worry. Day or night my girl Google and my Australian Hey-Siri can help a Sister out.

Plan your day or wing it?

My best laid plans left at home or ignored usually will render spontaneous serendipitous day! Truly, I can’t speak for my cousin but I had a marvelous time. Funny Girl was a great sport about me lugging the camera around and whipping it out as needed. (the camera)

Not sure if we have just evolved to where we are today organically or who to blame in our lineage. Clearly both of us will damn near talk to anyone about anything. We probably should thank our Grandmother Theda Faye. On the other hand Funny Girls Dad has shared his chat-ness too. My Mom has also given me this gift. Wait is it a gift?

Between our spontaneous schedule and chat sessions, we made friends where ever we went. Having no plan turned out to be the best plan. If you are mad about control, this may not work for you. After dumping luggage, we made a slight detour for a research project that I was working on. Funny Girl joined me at Tulane’s Special Collections to view documents that I needed to photo for my special project. A quiet time spent in the Collections area and then we were off for lunch.

Magazine Street delivers in a big way

After our spontaneous pit stops we had truly worked up a thirst and hunger. Once in New Orleans, report directly to Magazine Street to satisfy any shopping or food desires. Magazine Street has numerous delicious restaurants and I have never had a bad meal on this street.

Alon Shaya, Saba and flavors to love

Funny Girl and I had reserved a table at Saba. Alon Shaya did not disappoint, the food was stunningly good and filled with exotic flavors. Lutenitsa is roasted eggplant, tomato and red peppers surely slow cooked. Somehow the chef lures and tempts the vegetables to die a sudden death but not before releasing all of their flavors in a wonderful harmony which begs to be smeared onto a hot pita bread.

Our lunch served as a great opportunity for us to catch up while sipping a cocktail called Forever 29. Too bad it wasn’t the magic potion to turn us forever 29 or until we tired of 29. Hummus arrived to tame our hunger while we waited for Safta’s Fried Eggplant Sandwich.

Pita filled with hot fried eggplant, caramelized tomato, whipped goat cheese and mix greens . A perfect balance of flavors hitting all of the tastbuds. Damn this sandwich was totally insanely delish even to the point of it tasting like a meatball sandwich but maybe better. I’m pausing as I write this because a Meatball Po-boy is one of my all time favorites, even still Alons Safta’s Fried Eggplant Sandwich delivers flavor.

On a sad note, the customer service did not match the excellence of the food delivered. I won’t go into the gory details because I am sure it was a fluke. However, they failed to service on multiple points but everyone has a off day so here’s the hall pass.

After lunch, we headed to our hotel positioned central to all the action. Here my preference for hotels are locations between Canal and Poydras. Always, I am familiar with this space, its close enough to walk to French Quarter, Central Business District and easy to navigate to other parts of the city. Plus the late night street noise is less than other parts of the city that party until morning.

After dusting off the road, we headed out for an evening of amusement. Most of which came in the form of people watching and laughing at each others stories. New Orleans is alive 24/7 and will offer a different face each time you visit.

Funny Girl and I managed to eat, drink and be merry. Although we did not make it back in time for the nightly PBJ’s and hot chocolate. Instead we saddled up to the gorgeous bar positioned inside our hotel and ordered a nightcap and chatted about the days events and plotted our next 24 hours.

Be Open to Unexpected

After a good nights sleep a strong New Orleans coffee and hearty breakfast is desired. You must drive through Garden District and drive down St Charles. Every New Orleans trip should include a slow drive by the beautiful homes with their stunning verandas. Even small homes stand up against the elements with their haint blue porch ceilings and colorful architecture.

As we were catching up on our drive, we passed a Yard Sale sign. I reminded Funny Girl how much our Grannie loved a bargain and would smile with glee at her shiny new object that she purchased for a quarter. On the bumper of her car it had a sign that said “I Brake for Garage Sales” and she meant it.

By now I had passed the sign and we discussed braking for the sale. Before I knew it we had changed directions. Driving in the city while trying to watch for traffic, hip-ster bike riders toting edibles, tiny poorly written signs and navigating one way streets going the opposite of where you need to be is difficult. Quickly we turned down several streets to orient in the direction of our hidden treasures.

After a couple of loops and soul searching for our hidden sale, we found our treasure. Only it was not exactly what we were expecting. Camera in hand, I wandered over to the celebration and asked the homeowner if I could take a few photos. My Grannie would have giggled at the amount of joy and sass the women wore like a badge of courage. Deborah and Ms. Irma Watson could not have been more fun to speak with.

Meet Morris the Cat and Ms Watson

While I was taking photos of the sights all around, Ms Watson said, “Baby, do you see the cat?” Nope I didn’t see the cat. All I could see was Mardi Gras beads hanging all over da’ place. “Its right da, baby.” Still , I could not see the cat. Until Morris, winked and blinked his eyes at me. Morris, King of the Mardi Gras tree and cat to no one.

Funny Girl did not sit in the car for long. Before I knew it she came over to meet the Golden Girls. Deborah and Ms Irma are everything that makes New Orleans special and they clearly must be the fun house on the street. Please on your next stop to the Garden District, put this on your stop. Tell the ladies that Mimi sent you.

Before I could get away from this fun house, a car pulled up and asked me if I was taking pictures in the city. Clearly, my tourist hat was blinking like a neon sign. He suggested that I drive over to the next street and check out the big blue church that was in the process of being renovated. He laughed when I inquired for the address and said “You’ll see it.” Never one to turn down a locals travel suggestion, we waved bye to our new friends and Morris the Cat.

Oddly we never found the yard sale but after driving for a bit we found a big blue church in the middle of a grand renovation. A few guys were working outside and I asked if we could go in. Quickly we took their nod as a invitation to enter and take all the photos my little heart desired. Nonchalantly before anyone changed their minds, we wandered into a beautiful restoration.

Finding Sanctuary and de Sales

Ancient wood stripped down with care has a deep and special kind of beauty. Kudos to the group responsible for all of the hard work involved in preserving a slice of history. Future generations will worship, marry and celebrate life for many days to come. Quiet solitude surrounded us in this structure amid its directed chaos. After I traveled up the spiral staircase and looked over the large balcony I discovered someone deep in thought and managed to get a few pictures of her enjoying the space.

Walking into this space I was held in awe of the beauty that had been hiding under the layers of paint. Easy to imagine the space filled with people. It wasn’t until I returned home that I was able to research and discover any facts about the building. Founded in approximately 1867, Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Church served the community for over a century. Katrina heavily damaged the church and made it easier for it to be phased out until the Catholic Church sold the location

Before long, Funny Girl alerted me that the police were outside. “Uh oh, we in trouble now” I replied. Meanwhile I was pretty sure that I did not want to visit any of the New Orleans Parish jails so we started our departure quickly. As we left the church the police were deep in conversation with the workmen. Quickly we quietly headed to the Jeep and drove down the street.

Food and coffee were next on our list. The Standard is a stylish restaurant on Magazine Street with a delicious menu. As soon as I heard the special Blueberry Scones with Lemon Curd I ordered a batch. Hot from the oven the blueberry scones melted it’s sweetness on my tongue while the lemon curd said “Hello, Darling!”

Allison and Leslie took great care of us while we were dining at The Standard. This was my first time dining at The Standard and I loved it. Quaint spot on Magazine Street with neighborhood bar and full menu. Locals popped in and out for a “Bloody Mary” which seemed to be the hot ticket for the day.

After breakfast we walked down to a Fete Francaise, a free New Orleans French Festival hosted annually by Ecole Bilingue de la Nouvelle-Orleans. Festival is school’s largest fundraiser designed to promote all things French. Fete Francaise is truly fun for all ages and a great way to mingle in with the locals.

Truly I could go on forever about this city that I love. New Orleans is so much more than visitors realize. Please get off the beaten path, walk down a different street, try a new restaurant, go to a museum, listen to unique music and enjoy. Yes you blew it if you missed 30aSongwriters Festival in January. Fear not you will have another opportunity and months to plan. Mimi’s Tips to Navigate 30a Songwriters Festival 2020 will help lead the way.

In the first place, 2019 30a Songwriters Festival included 200 artists playing at 30 venues over 4 days scattered from Grand Boulevard Destin to venues in Rosemary Beach. Each venue offering a different setting, seating or food and beverage options to host talented singer songwriters. Festival stretched out in venues ranging from town halls to bars, patios, shops, restaurants and amphitheater.

30a Songwriters Festival is an adventure

After all until you attend it is hard to appreciate how great this festival truly is for introducing new artists or allowing you to see an old favorite in a completely unique setting. Cultural Arts Alliance and Russell Carter Artist Management have spent a decade creating a gem of a festival. Certainly Grill Man and I are hooked.

Equally important pay attention because tickets sold out before the event even started. The first year you attend event it is tough trying to narrow down how to choose from the huge array of artists, time slots and venue locations. Yet I admit that I was unfamiliar with most of the artists names until I read their bios. In some cases, I didn’t have a musical note to attach to the songwriter.

A few artists I could not wait to hear

A couple of years ago, Funny Girl introduced me to Marc Broussard. Marc became part of my kitchen play list. Ever since I had been following his tour schedule but when he was here I was there. Marc Broussard became the number one musician that I wanted to see and hear at the festival. Clearly I was not alone, our group loaded up and went early to one of the venues to ensure a seat hours before Mark would play.

After securing a spot to settle into, I decided to wander around the venue space to sort out lighting options. Nightclubs with a no flash policy offer challenges for taking good photos. While wandering I noticed a guy sporting style like he walked off the runway or popped off the Matrix film set. I needed to take his photo. Could I? Should I? I decided the best approach was a direct one, the worse that he could say was no.

My boldness was rewarded and David Jones is the nicest total stranger that I have ever singled out for a photo. David is as kind as he is handsome. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation about music, food, Louisiana and discovered he too is a musician. David Jones will be added to my list of musicians to watch. Eventually I returned to my seat to share what I had uncovered and listen to music. Guess who he is traveling with? What? Who?

Much later at some point before the show, I noticed David Jones and one of his mates Marc Broussard sitting at the bar. Since we are all from Louisiana I thought that it was appropriate to welcome them. Funny Girl is from his neck of the woods and were family. So it’s highly possible in a remote kind of way that we’re related to someone we know in LA. That makes us all family, right?

Marc and David are both easy to talk with, its easy to see the Louisiana in their soul. A love of life, family, music and food topped our conversations. Marc is clearly in love with his family and it comes out in his music. Grill Man and I will look forward to his tour schedule coming close to our home.

Live artists deliver passion in person

Musicians are a generous group traveling all over the country singing, caressing notes from a guitar, playing loud, banging on drums and tambourines. In their hearts they have created a story wrapped around a melody. At the end of the day, they want you to get the message, dig the song, tap your feet and maybe shake your booty. And if you will be so kind to buy, play and share the music.

Central Square Records will certainly assist with your music orders. Laid back record store converted into a listening room for festival. Vinyl albums line the walls along with t-shirts designed from album covers. Central Square Records has a groovey music vibe in addition to all the gift ideas.

Our friend Dr Music runs the sound for musicians at Central Square Records and magically assists. Dr Music knows his tunes maybe even more than Grill Man and always has a great music recommendation. Spend a few minutes and discover Dr Music’s Sonic Suitcase  and vinyl store in Fairhope.

Mimi’s Tips to Navigate 30aSongwriters Festival 2020

1.0 Block off dates in your calendar January 17- 20, 2020. Event is held during MLK Jr. weekend.

2.0 Schedule your trip to soak up the local flavors. If you can swing it, add a couple of days on the front or end of the trip. As a minimum you will need to arrive the day before the festival starts so that you may hit the ground early and not miss anything.

3.0 Review the web site for festival details of musicians. Artist lineup provides photo and bio detailing things you may not know. By reviewing artists throughout the year you will be in a better position to make your schedule once they announce 2020 artist locations and times. There is no guarantee that each artist will return but past line up is a good place to start review until 2020 lineup is posted.

4.0 Use your favorite technology to learn about the artists. Whether its a shout out to Alexa, you tube or spotify, listen to each one. My go to spot for listening is while I am cooking in the kitchen. Upon completion of this you will know who to add to the top of your list, listened to good music and broadened your music knowledge. If one artist does not appeal to you, go to the next one.

5.0 Directly before festival starts, a hard schedule will be posted. Review list, select main acts that you want to see and then design a venue schedule around the time slots. If your favorite act starts at 4, you may want to head over to venue at 2 or earlier and grab a seat or get in line. Introduce yourself to your fellow music lover and enjoy. Sign up for festival app from the official web site. Even today I am still using it as a tool to review artists.

6.0 Next year, I want to focus more on artists that I have never seen perform. I loved all of my favs but fell for a couple of new artists. Be open minded about listening to new artists, all of the singer songwriters at this festival are talented.

7.0 Review venue locations then choose where you would like to stay during festival and book an accommodation. Rental is a great place to leave your car. A small city along 30a is a great spot whether its Seaside, Watercolor, Grayton Beach, Seagrove or Rosemary Beach. Parking is a premium and this makes a great case to walk, bike, taxi or uber.

8.0 A rental will allow you to make breakfast and coffee. Trust me you will coffee to keep up the pace. Certainly a refrigerator comes in handy keeping your champagne, wine or beer icy cold. Our group took turns cooking breakfast before we headed out everyday. Other meals were shared in restaurants while listening to the artist. Remember to bring water to stay hydrated. Rentals never have enough toilet paper, paper towels, coffee and coffee filters. Although, a store will be close by you will be too busy enjoying music to shop.

9.0 Festival offers a variety of venues with seating for 50 or 5000. If you get tired of large crowds seek out the smaller venues. Small venues offer a more intimate experience and allow you to be closer to the artist for viewing or listening pleasure. By choosing a mixture of venues it will help balance your festival experience.

10.0 Cities that surround the festival offer many choices to enjoy natures beauty. Plan a early morning walk or bike ride to squeeze in your exercise before the music starts. Only a few places in the world feature a dune lake New Zealand, Australia, Madagascar and along Florida’s 30a. For example, check out Seasides Western Coastal Dune Lake.

11.0 Weather this time of year may change quickly from sunny and 70 to wet and cold. Plan to pack clothes that layer well and don’t forget rain jacket and wellies just in case.

12.0 Load up outdoor chairs, sunscreen and hats if you attend any events on Grand Boulevard you will need it. Coolers will not be allowed into this location. Food, wine and beer is sold at this venue.

13.0 Select the artists that you want to see and don’t be afraid to split up and meet back at other locations. Our group walked to venues, rode bikes and ubered as necessary.

14.0 For the last two years The Sundogs hosted a Tom Petty Tribute at AJ’s Grayton Beach. We were lucky to catch it this year although it started at 11pm. After a full day of music it was a late night but so worth the effort. Surprise guests joined them on stage to rock it out. If you want to see this next year, go very early to grab a table. The joint will be packed & very lively, bless their hearts.

15.0 Remember this event is set up as a listening room. Once the artist starts be respectful and listen. Artists and fellow music lovers will appreciate it. Clearly Grill Man and I enjoy music. It only seemed appropriate to share Mimi’s Tips to Navigate 30aSongwriters Festival 2020. Being front and center and hearing songwriters talk about inspiration for a song is special.

As a music lover if all of this wasn’t reason enough for you to check out this festival, all proceeds benefit the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County a private non-profit 501 (c)3. Weekend away and tickets make a great gift experience to any music lover and fun way to celebrate.

Put this on the top of your gift list for any music lover 21 or older. Great family outing to plan with your adult children. Music is a good way to find common ground and it’s possible that you will learn something about each other. Event easily allows for you to spend some time together and split up as needed.

Official guides Prince and Scarlett flip back and forth between lovely worlds home, condo and foodie mecca. Sadly for all of us, we’re unable to beam up at will. Long hours  endured in the car is reduced with great music and submission to chatter and organizing of life plans. At the end of the journey  is a great travel spot and if lucky a cozy bed to lay your weary head.

Pack light or be ready?

While our destination spot and guest suite had all the amenities to make us welcome. Grill Man and I settled in with our excessive luggage. It’s possible Scarlett and Prince were anxious at the huge cartload of luggage not even two people could carry. Maybe one day when I “really grow up” this will be within my skill set and all of my friends will be in awe. Is it possible?

While try as I might packing light seems unattainable and I blame it solely on the scouts. Although I may be taking “Be Prepared” to an extreme. Truly, dining at Mar-a-Lago or paddling on the inter coastal requires lots of stuff.  No matter the activities we were happy to arrive and share time with our friends in North Palm Beach.

First stop on Foodie Mecca and Mimi’s Travels

Quickly whisked off to an extremely casual local’s spot, Captain Charlie’s Reef Grill. In Juno Beach CCRG  resides tucked away in same building for  decades. Our guides warned us that we may have a wait but could chill in the bar. A standard for this restaurant due to its popularity. Menu is extensive and impressive with food descriptions.

From the Blackened Scallop Salad warm vinaigrette, Gorgonzola, bacon & walnuts to Swordfish au Poivre with Brandy Cream, what’s not to like? Or Duck Confit skillet crisped with white bean salad, yay baby. Wine list at  restaurant is very reasonable. Too many menu options and so little time left this restaurant on my list to try on another visit.

Visit Foodie Mecca and Mimi’s Travel Destination

Most noteworthy in-season a temperate climate will greet you in North Palm Beach aka NPB. More palm trees than you have ever seen will wave you in to foodie mecca. Besides the water wonderland that surrounds a shopping paradise is waiting for you too.  Shopping  is everywhere and as far as the heavy plastic will carry you.

All oenophiles, liquor lovers and thirsty shoppers head to Total Wine & More to view the grand selections and new products available. While traveling visiting wine shops will give you access to different buying networks and channels of distribution. Watching Grill Man I could almost hear Nat King Cole singing “tiny tots with their eyes all aglow” while shopping.

When shopping I love to find new products to play with in my kitchen. As soon as I saw the Cocktail Caviar I knew it would also make a great gift for most. Who doesn’t want a pop of raspberry vodka in your mouth?

My new favorite Market in Foodie Mecca

Once the quench has been satiated, move over to Doris Italian Bakery & Market.  Before moving through the store report directly to the wine aisle, insert your card and try a glass of vino.  Wine stop elevates your shopping to a merry trip.

Above all, I adored this market from start to finish. It has everything that a market should offer from hand stretched mozzarella to professional sausage maker and full bakery with old world recipes.  Hence, Doris Italian Bakery and Market might break the Mimi-bank if it was near me  with its tempting delights.

Doris Italian Bakery places emphasis on products and service.  Clearly everyone is happy to shop in this store and eager to return home with their prize.  Try a large sandwich which would be great for entertaining on game day, office party,  picnics or beach outing.

Experience one evening from Foodie Mecca and Mimi’s Travels

In the land of palm trees and money, great restaurants, gorgeous resorts and hip hot spots are everywhere. We only had time to try a couple on this trip. Fear not, my trusty guide Scarlett had managed all of the legwork to tempt our foodie palate with an appetizer of locations.

Every evening should start with a cocktail celebration and Bricktops is a good place to start. From the valet we headed to the outside bar area located on the water nestled in around palm trees and twinkling lights. Clearly a favorite locals hot spot for dinner and drinks. Skillfully, we managed to weave our way to the libations and enjoy the action unfolding around us.

Next stop grab a seat at   Limoncello Ristorante.   Settle in with a glass at the bar.   Our bartender John offered the best service and attention to detail which paired beautifully with our meal. I must warn you the bread they serve is crispy, hot and dangerously delicious. Pop over to their website and view the menu. What makes your mouth start to water? Ignoring all calorie counting, everything I tried satisfied the foodie in me.

Remember, it is always helpful to follow up a great meal with a bit of cardio. No evening should be complete without dancing or some form of mambo.   Within a short drive Cucina Cabana offers dining, cock-tails, dancing and  nightly entertainment.

Lifewise if you long for people watching get ready for a show. I loved our time at this dance spot although it wasn’t quite long enough. Pack your boogie shoes and don’t forget to shake your groove-thang. Locals love Cucina Cabana and come ready to party hard whether it’s the early crowd or late night.

Plan a Girls Weekend to North Palm Beach

On another day Scarlett organized a lovely menu around Annual Holiday Boat parade.  Put this into your schedule for December but plan ahead for a viewing spot on the water or you will miss out.  This evening tied in well with her friends that were also hosting a party and were gracious to include us.

As a result of our great hosts, destination, food to temptations I will return for a deeper investigation into Foodie Mecca and Mimi’s travels . North Palm Beach offers it wrapped around a beautiful and opulent package. In consideration of everything it is an ideal location for a girls trip, just remember to bring your heavy plastic to Foodie Mecca and Mimi’s Travel spot.

Mix up your life and work with  a change of address

Relocating allows you to leave your chores and routine at home while you head off to parts unknown. Yet work is still around hanging about like a fog. With the necessity of work, family and play must be managed. Of course, this is before you add in the laundry, cleaning and never-ending errands to keep up your household. All of these things are weaved into our fabric of life.

Occasionally necessities are postponed or avoided but even the dust bunnies will take over if you let them. Learning to unwind is vital to your sanity. Our brain and bodies want  a respite daily even if we don’t want to slow down long enough. If you can’t get away for a longer vacation, select something close to home. You too can unwind on Dauphin Island!

Dauphin Island is the perfect island getaway place for a family that enjoys  water activities. Whether it’s boating, fishing, skiing, beaching, skateboarding, paddle boarding, surfing or sunset critiques the island offers it all.  White sandy beaches with salty water that lures you in for a dip or fishing.

Inshore or offshore fishing is amazing on or near the Island. Gulf Coast waters hosts the best fishing in the world. With a large variety of species you can catch your limit before you know it. Research before you go and don’t forget to pack everything from sunscreen, hats and fishing license. Outdoor Alabama has lots of information to help you plan.

What to expect while visiting Dauphin Island?

Life on Dauphin Island is typical to what  you would expect on most islands. Everything is island casual and ultra laid back every where. People are super friendly and happy to help or direct you as needed. Dauphin Island is a small community of locals with a steady stream of visitors.

Public Beach has plenty of parking and easy access to the water’s edge for your enjoyment. Availability is limited on the amount of selections offered on the island. Stores on Dauphin Island offer island-pricing at some locations.

Bring everything that you may need while on the island. If you forget an item just go buy it.  It is not like you pay $3.87 for a dozen of eggs all the time. Yes, $3.87 plus tax for plain jane un-cage-free eggs. My chickens would be appalled.

Most importantly, remember while  visiting you’re on Island-Time. Settle in and grab a cocktail whether it’s on a dock or beach side. The island offers many water spots to grab a great view of sunsets and slowly sip a cocktails. Although work managed to weave in and out like a loose thread stuck to your clothes that you never seem to get rid of, I relaxed.

Can you unwind on Dauphin Island? If quiet coastal living is your goal, Dauphin Island is your place.  City Council and founding Fathers have managed to keep away  big business and big box stores. Unlike Destin or Gulf Shores, traffic is non-existent everywhere you go. Yet, Dauphin Island is a different speed than Destin or Gulf Shores.

Dauphin Island is 14 miles long and its widest point is 1 3/4 miles long. No matter where you step,  water is never too far away with multiple public beach access points. Plenty of rental options with an assortment of amenities designed to fit most budgets.

Our crew certainly took full advantage of the water sports. I managed to paddle multiple times but still could not get enough. It was true joy to take my nephews and their Momma paddling for the first time. Everyone paddled like pros and no one fell off the board.  My mischievous nephew jumped ship but his Momma was quick enough to pull him back in without falling over.

Water is a great family friendly place to discover and share time fishing or boating.  If you  wait long enough you may see jellyfish, jumping fish or dolphins.  Dolphins came out to greet me on several occasions which always makes brings excitement. Especially if you notice the fin first without seeing that it’s only a dolphin. And yes I hear that music occasionally you know the one, it starts with duunnn dunnn.

Happily all of my fins have been dolphins! Baywatch came over  for the day and we paddled all over the west end Gulf side of the Public Beach.  Paddle, paddle and more paddling for a couple of hours until we were starving.

The day before we paddled Grill Man and Bama Beau had caught plenty speckle trout for us to cook and eat.  My girl and I whipped up dinner while Grill Man battered the fish with a Zatarains fish fry. Bama Beau moved in the kitchen as fry-daddy until the fish were hot and crispy. Dinner turned into a group effort. I highly suggest this as always a good idea to share kitchen duties to make it easier on kitchen Momma and great way to spend time together.

Baywatch and I were happy for the leftovers  after our long paddle along with my favorite Zipper Peas . Cold glass of wine paired along well with our meal and much deserved after our long paddle. Sitting by the water staring off into space and chatting with friends is a great way to spend the afternoon.

Natures beauty is all over the island in lots of nooks and crannies. Plenty of things to see and photograph on the island. From the Audubon Bird Sanctuary, Sea Lab, Fort Gaines, Shell Mound Park and many sandy beaches  to share  with your family. Good idea to step away from crowds, technology and get back to basics.

After family time is over for the day,  whip out the  blender and mix up a frosty concoction like pina colada or daiquiri. Rum and fruit juice with a cute little umbrella will put you in the mood.  Whether you choose to unwind on Dauphin Island or any other quick get away spot, pick a place to Shake It Off, relax and recharge.

Everyone needs the battery recharged. Sadly, in the US we have a tendency to go-go-go to work-work-work. Our friends overseas plug-in downtime more than we do.  I for one am ready to change that in my world. How about you? Are you ready to unwind on Dauphin Island?
