Not long ago my Bonus Mom suggested that we cook cheeseburgers instead of making a big fuss. Smiling first at the thought of putting my feet up while Grill Man organized the grill, I thought about it for a minute. I replied that her son and others would rebel if cornbread dressing and pecan pie went MIA. My Bonus Mom’s Pecan Pie needs it’s own James Beard Award. (Recipe under the dessert section)

Even I know she loves cheeseburgers. Although it was all about making sure that we didn’t make a fuss. Yet, even when I tire myself out in the kitchen, I am where I want to be. Cooking is a labor of love that I enjoy sharing with my family and friends. Entertaining for family or friends is one of my joys. Along with it of course is a lot of extra work but it is worth it. Set aside time to dine slowly with your loved ones and enjoy real conversations. Start a revolution, have everyone leave their phone in the car. What? Is it possible?

Recently, I watched a movie about three adult children returning home for the holidays and the drama that usually ensues in “some homes”. This movie included standard sibling rivalry, aging parents, grandchildren running amok and other chaotic events. If this scene creates dejavu for you , even to the point of secretly desiring proof of your adoption papers. My plan would be to feed them well and have adult beverages on hand.

At least while you share a meal you may find something in common. Entire dinner party conversations could surround the safety of food talking points. From the local food sourcing and farms to the complexities of the wine served. While dining ask everyone to share their favorite food memory or favorite dish and latest food love.

Food is something that we should be able to agree on without coming to blows. Stay away from politics, covid, and other long standing taboo family topics. I certainly could curate a conversation around food. Food is a safe subject, right?

Desserts just make us happy

No dinner table is complete without dessert. Desserts just make us happy. Whether you let them eat cake, brownies, pie or cookies you will need a sweet treat. Desserts are another great recipe to bake ahead of event and set aside. All your best days should include dessert even if it’s only a kiss.

If chocolate is your love, the dessert category has several options for you to bake and serve. Top dessert off with a side of ice cream, coffee and Kahlua and call it a day.

To say nothing of the fact that Men-nu found me. With clear vision he realized I needed a mascot to keep me focused and in my writing chair. Someone to provide a gentle nudge towards the writing machine I call my computer. As a creative with an overactive idea generator a writing partner would help keep me on task. Maybe even keep me away from the dreaded Satan’s eyeball AKA tv.

First of all, this lover of all things seafood could distract me away momentarily long enough to scratch under his chin. Indeed possibly even move me out of the chair long enough to locate the little squirrel stuffed with catnip or toss him a treat.

Secondly, my new mascot needed a new home as much as I needed a writing partner.

Why did I need a writing partner?

In addition, writing projects, non fiction books and research materials were piling up on more than one desk in my home. In light of a desire to create and put a pen to paper or fingers to keys needed a gentle motivator besides my natural inclinations. After work or end of the day fatigue was sucking my energy, brain power and vitality.

After all, vitamins were clearly only going to do so much with this twenty year old plus plus plus body and booty. Clearly a mascot is exactly what I needed and in walked Men-nu. Above all in 2020, I want to complete several writing ideas that I have had on my mind. My new mascot and New Years Day menu should give me a winning start for 2020. No point in tempting the fates.

Now when it comes to being hungry, a close friend introduced me to her family favorite. Truly incredible it is a recipe to feed a crowd but it can certainly be adjusted down to meet your needs. Just for when this dish is too much effort, I have another one for you to try  that is just as good and less labor intensive. Recipe includes rice, corn, cheese and bacon. Creamy with just the right mix of sweet from the corn and savory to tempt.  While reviewing my recipes I added this to our table for my next guests. I love  Kickin Corn and Rice Casserole.

Recently I cooked three of my favorite pies while entertaining a group of new house guests.  Chess Pie, Love the family and Oh my, That Pecan Pie  and Southern Comfort and Oh That Chocolate Pie.  

I am a chocolate lover and it is hard to not like the sinfully good velvet feel in your mouth with my recipe Southern Comfort and Oh that Chocolate Pie. One guest said that it was the “best thing that he had ever put in his mouth”. We had only just met so I didn’t question him further.

I love this chocolate pie. If only I had Minnie’s Chocolate pie recipe but  until then.

7.0 Most importantly, remember to relax and have fun. Your guests are happy to join you  and share quality time. Stop worrying about creating perfection and just do your best.

8.0 Make a plan, stick to it, adapt when needed and if you get in the weeds, please ask for help.

9.0 If you get overwhelmed, have a glass and breathe!

Even the snafus that make your heart hit the floor briefly.  For example,  Grill Man unplugged the  22 quart roaster that contained “the turkey”.  Clearly,  ground coffee beans were needed for one more pot of coffee.  Unplugging the grinder was not so bad. Forgetting to plug the roaster back in presented a slight issue. Thankfully, Grill Man and I are fans of cooking turkeys using the low and slow method. Yet, an hour unplugged did not create a crisis.

Tried and true turkey cooking method

The night before serving, place a thawed turkey in a large roaster and set dial on 200 degrees. In the morning you may insert digital thermometer and assess if the turkey needs to continue cooking.  Set thermometer alarm to desired temperature to prevent overcooking. Reserve  hot chicken broth to drizzle over turkey once placed on platter an cover with foil.

Always, purchase the largest turkey that will fit in your cooker. This will make sure that you have plenty for your guests and leftovers. Turkey is extremely economical and  makes great leftovers. Who doesn’t love turkey sandwiches?

Annually in November,  Grill Man and I host our local family and friends for lunch. This day has developed with the help of our friends to include several traditions that make the day special. More importantly, our meal and day is a joint effort where  everyone participates. I love trying all of the new dishes and savoring the old favorites.

How do we manage a large meal for our special day?

As host, Grill Man and I cook the ham and turkey. Our guests select a menu item to share.  For guests that don’t want to cook, offer an assignment like providing a  prepared dessert, rolls or wine. Texting allows for easy coordination of menu options with guests. Of course, everyone is happy to take part and bring a dish they want to share.

Guests sharing in the meal preparation relieves the host to focus on preparing the house for the days events. Make a list ahead of time and start tackling the cleaning chores at least a week ahead of your event. Think about the table setting and  select items you will need.   Set up beverage area and  bar ahead of time. Please ask for help  with decorations or setting the table the day before.

Suddenly, the magic happens at lunch. Assign someone to greet guests as they arrive and direct them to adult beverages. Typically, I stay in the kitchen to get a handle on the menu items as they arrive. Grill Man is busy carving ham and turkey.  Our meal is always served buffet style as soon as everyone arrives.

Since our day this year, included a few new friends we had a crew. Amazingly, thirty-six of us gathered in a circle and gave thanks for our time together. All of us, happy sharing! After a relaxed lunch, laughs and some loosening of the belts, a few friends jump in the kitchen to clear away part of the mayhem.  Thank you to the faithful, we love  you.

In summary, a large crowd entails more planning for your event. Use indoor and outdoor space to include everyone. Set up card tables to handle extra people. Yet, perfection is not on the menu. Plan ahead and offer your best efforts, this is all that is expected. And remember to let the good times roll.

Week at the beach screams for a well planned menu. A menu that lends itself to preparing ahead  of time at home, freeze  and transport to join the fun. First, extra planning and cooking for you before your trip. Let’s face it, it will be easier for you to cook meals in your home. You have everything at your fingertips, baking dishes, seasonings, stocked pantry and recipes.

Sharing a home cooked meal and engaging in conversations is important to family relationships. If you have teenagers or young adults, it is important to have special time with them while you may.  They will be up and out of the house before you know it.  A meal at home provides a relaxed atmosphere and allows you to linger longer than a meal out.

What does cooking meals ahead reduce ?

-reduce transporting to/from beach items to cook, seasonings & pantry basics
-reduce multiple grocery trips  & paying more for small packaging
cost of eating out
-reduced aggravation because your stuck inside cooking while missing beach fun with family
-poor choices for quick meals including junk & fast food

Planning meals for the beach will enhance the special time for you and your family. It will give you a framework, on which to plan trip and let everyone know the plan. Please allow for flexibility, allow for freedom of choice and add in “free-days”. Decide ahead of time which meals will need everyone in attendance. Too much planning or structure does not allow for spontaneity.

As a suggestion, recommend that for breakfast and lunch, everyone is on their own. Prepare a list of items available for your crew to prepare for themselves or reheat for breakfast or lunch. After all, this will end the barrage of questions about meals.

Set a time for everyone to be ready to join the evening meal. Anyone late is first on the list for kitchen duty for breakfast. Enjoy the meal and dinner conversation with your family. Then  allow everyone to help with the clean up before moving on to other things after dinner.

Discussions of beach activity options for the week will keep everyone busy for the first night. Between the days adventures and tomorrow’s possibilities, you should have plenty to talk about. Not to mention no one will go hungry with your planned menu.

Oh my, how time flies when you’re having fun. It has been a whirlwind over the last week with family visiting. Our group hailed in from Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana to visit our little corner of paradise. Actually, it really was all about meeting the baby and Super-baby meeting all of us. A baby breathes new life and shares it with the rest of us.

As a result, we had people coming and going, but mostly they stayed. Grill-Man and I were fortunate to host my daughter, parents, siblings, spouses and tiny ones in our home. While little ones were the joy of it all.

My baby sister AKA Artful, Superman and the newest addition, Super-baby arrived in full splendor carrying an entire household of baby items. Who would ever suspect that babies needed so much stuff? Thankfully, I had a very large room for the trio to share.

Super-baby is adorable. It is pure entertainment to view the world from the eyes of a  little one.Especially since learning how they view their world makes me giggle. For the wee ones, it all boils down to the simple things. We should probably learn a thing or two from them.

As a result, my Mom was the happiest woman on the planet to have all of  children and grandchildren together. We were able to capture her joy with photos of the entire crew. I have it on record that we showed up and enjoyed it.

And it was long overdue for all of us to share time and break bread together. During the course of the week, we shared good times and good food. If you need to host a group in your home, it is a good idea to have recipes on hand that cut the prep work or allow for earlier preparation. A few suggestions to serve for your next guests.

Have you ever been to a Painting in Tutu’s Party? Me neither. This is the best party idea for young girls, ever. I wish that I could lay claim to the creation, preparation, or even any of the food. My cousin Curly-locks is the genius behind this princess-approved-creative-paint-party.

This would have been my dream party as a little girl. I need to call my Mom now and request my long overdue Painting in Tutu’s party. Is it too late for me? Has my window of opportunity passed? Sadly, even I realize Mimi’s bottom doesn’t need to be wrapped up in a pink tutu or a tutu of any color.

Curly-locks and Surfer have two bright adorable children, Inspector Gadget and Princess-in-Training. Princess-in-Training was five and at a large milestone in her life, kindergarten graduation. A party was certainly on the to-do list but Curly-locks and Surfer delivered an extrava-tu-tu-ganza! How could any little girl not be blown away by the joy of it?

I am sure that in New Orleans, this was the Painting-in-Tutu’s Party of the Season. Being on the invite list had to make your day if you were friends with Princess-in-Training. My cousin prepared the invites and mailed the list.  No ball gowns required but tutu’s were mandatory.

The party included everything that you would expect at a party.

Gifts were  found.
If you looked around.
Fun day and plenty to share.
A day to paint without a care.

Everything draped in fun and tutu wrapped. The theme carried throughout even the cupcakes were tutu-ed up.

Directions for tutu-ing your cupcake

Use scrapbook paper to cut out a shape of the female form for a  template. Use template to make copies out of different colored scrapbook paper.  Wrap little streamers around to form the skirt and tie with a tiny piece of ribbon around the waist. Use tape to adhere to a toothpick to insert in to cupcake. Voila a tutu-cupcake. I am sure that a cupcake wearing a tutu tastes way better than one that is tutu-less.

Suggestions for Gift Bags
The gift bags contained items to paint at party and to take home and enjoy. Gift Bags included the following:

wooden bird house
wooden picture frame
little clay pots
heart-shaped boxes
paint brushes
aprons with their initials on it
bubbles and lots of candy

And my personal favorite:
a decorative glitter mask to apply to the sweet little faces

Directions for Lace Headbands

Purchase lace, fabric stiffener, poster board and glue. (glitter and paint if you want to bling it up) Form poster board into a tube that is the circumference of a little girls head and tape or secure. Soak the lace in fabric stiffener per package instructions and then form around a poster board and allow to dry. Once dried glue the edges to form a circle. Apply paint, glitter or sprinkles as necessary. Bling it up, baby!

After looking at all the work that went into the organizing, I know that  my cousins had as much fun planning this adorable event as I do when I plan a function. Truly, I love planning a party. It is the best-est fun! It’s obvious a ton of love went into this event and it shows. The idea behind this party could be adjusted for different age groups. On this special day for Princess, another gift was given.  Curly-locks gave her the special doll house that our Grandmother, Granny G gave her as a teenager.  Later in life my Granny started making doll houses for her grandchildren and she also made one for my girl. Little ones love it. Granny G  told Curly-locks to pass it on to her little girl one day. Graduation day was the event she was waiting for.

Although I knew the answer, I even asked Curly-locks if her little Princess-in-Training enjoyed the party.  Princess said ” It was the best day of her life.” and thanked her Mom a million times. Even now, randomly she will thank her Mom for her “painting in tutu’s party”. Princess-in-Training may want another tutu-ed-event.

Of course when I saw the photos of this party, I knew how special it was for the little girls and their Moms that attended. Surely, love enveloped every tutu. What a great day sharing and celebrating. Painting in Tutus Party is a lovely idea. This creativity will encourage and inspire you to action.  Art, Paints, Tutu’s, friends, gifts and food!
